SOMA UK – "Sharing Of Ministries Abroad"

"We work for the transformation of individuals and churches, and the healing of communities and their lands through the renewing power of the Holy Spirit We send and receive teams worldwide on short-term mission within the Anglican Communion".

SOMA UK has been supported by gifts from Holy Trinity in 2004 & 2005 and from 2006 became a full link.  We have close links with SOMA as Alison Morgan is a member of the Advisory Council, Andrew Cooke is SOMA’s treasurer and a trustee and John Woolmer has led SOMA teams.

SOMA's Main Areas of Activity

  • Sending teams of clergy and lay people to assist Anglican dioceses in the developing world in their mission – through partnership, teaching and prayer, in the renewing power of the Holy Spirit.

  • Bringing Christian leaders to the UK to share their vision and energy with churches and dioceses here.

  • Recently the teaching includes the theme of Community Transformation, involving the healing of the wounds of history and through Anglican missions seek to develop a renewal perspective worldwide.

  • Our work with the Church in countries like Rwanda and  has given us a new perspective on the suffering church. We are working to assist them in their crucial role as a prophetic community, during the painful process of rebuilding a nation after years of conflict.

SOMA work in Kenya photoIn 2006 teams visited Malawi, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Tanzania (2), Uganda, and Zambia.  3 teams have gone to different Dioceses in Southern Sudan and a team has led a Retreat for Bishops and wives from Kenya.  Also a team is leading a national Youth Leaders’ Conference in Kenya and SOMA is sending teams to a “Soul in the City” project in Nairobi, Kenya (involving 500 young people working in deprived areas of the city, including 14 from Holy Trinity).

Who Goes on a Team?

God calls a variety of clergy and lay people to serve on teams – over 100 will go on a team during the next year, many for the first time.

Who Works for SOMA UK?

SOMA has one full-time member of staff – the National Director, Revd Don Brewin and two two part-time staff members: Mary Cloake, the Development Officer, and a Financial Administrator, Danielle Howard.

How is SOMA Financed?

Since its inception SOMA has been given just enough money to continue in a “pilgrim lifestyle”.  The office is in a converted stable and chicken-house in a farmyard.  All SOMA’s funds come from churches and individuals who share SOMA’s vision.  However, in a changing situation we are urgently seeking alternative sources of finance, to ensure that our work can continue to expand.

Prayer Needs

Don Brewin retires in April 2007 and the trustees are seeking the right person to take SOMA forward in its mission.  Please pray that the right person will be found and for wisdom for the trustees.  Please also pray that more people will start supporting SOMA financially.

From one of the Team Leader’s Reports:

"One of the interpreters shared his experience of being filled with the Holy Spirit, and [then] God took over. It was truly a revival moment.  Healings happened … All glory be to God.  This was an afternoon none of us will ever forget."
